Safe Haven Animal Rescue is 100% volunteer-run. We have an amazing group of volunteers who work tirelessly to enhance the lives of the cats in our care.

Foster Care
The role of a foster care giver cannot be overvalued. Fosters are the backbone of our operation. Our fosters take in cats from a wide variety of backgrounds. They deal with cats who are shy and timid, cats who have lived in colonies and are completely unsocialized with people, cats who have special needs, mother cats and kittens, cats who need intensive support, and sometimes cats who need palliative care. Our fosters are knowledgeable, competent cat lovers who ensure that their foster cat has all the advantages and support they need.
Fundraising |
Without our intrepid fundraisers, Safe Haven could not exist. Costs of running a cat rescue are prohibitive. Medical costs alone exceed $10,000.00 a year. On top of that, there are regular upkeep items like food and litter, toys, cleaning supplies—you name it!
Each year, our fundraising team conducts two or three significant events: the annual Ticket Auction event, extensive yard sales, and flea markets. Interspersed with the large events are raffles on craft items and art, often produced by our own volunteers. If you’re a person who loves to work with a dynamic team, loves to organize events, and make connections with community businesses and donors, we’d love to meet you! We’re always looking for new and unique ideas to help flush out our coffers. |

On-site Volunteer Roles |
The Safe Haven shelter, located in Berwick, has six enclosures, each of which houses anywhere between one to five cats. Some of our long term residents live in the main area of the shelter. Most of the time, the shelter is at capacity. Volunteers come into the shelter every morning and evening to do all the feeding, cleaning, and (sometimes) medicating as needed. Volunteers usually do this for one regular shift per week.
Safe Haven also has volunteers who are devoted to interacting with the cats. These volunteers provide enrichment opportunities and socialization for the cats who’ve had less experience with humans. The volunteers encourage the cats to become companionable so that they can be adopted into a safe, forever home.
